Who’s watching out for your grocery budget? No one but you, and this truth is echoed strongly in a recent article on the nytimes website entitled, “At Stores, Making 5 for $5 a Bigger Draw Than 1 for $1”. This article talks about the strategies behind getting shoppers to spend more money at the grocery store. One strategy is the popular “10 for $10” promotion. Grocery stores use this sale tactic to get you to buy more of the product, even if you don’t need it. What the grocery store sale signs don’t tell you is that most times you can buy fewer than ten, and still pay only $1.00 per item. All it takes is asking at the customer service desk. Stocking up on items when they are at their rock bottom prices makes good sense, but buying 10 containers of something you won’t use up before it expires does not. Don’t let the power of suggestion take you off your money saving course. Shop with a list, and buy only what you know you will use, otherwise those “bargains” are just wasting your money.
